So, hey. I sew a little and I’m into old handcrafts and I’ve been wanting to make a crazy quilt for a few years now. I own one passed down in my family and I also found an incomplete square in an antique shop which showed me how they were constructed.

My work above is 100% hand stitched and cut with scissors - I have no newfangled quilting cutters or such. A muslin 11″ square is laid out, and the pieces are chosen, pinned, then basted in place and pressed. Then I embroider the seams and rip out the basting and press again.

I take inspiration for the embroidery patters from the vintage examples that I have in my possession as well as a stitch guide I found. I’m using new fabrics and threads with old designs.

I got 5 and a half blocks done from November ‘17 to April ‘18, but now that I have yard work to do, I’ll probably either put this down for a few months, or at least slow way down. Might get Block VI done and I’d like to get Blocks VII and VIII laid out as I just got tons more fabrics from a pal. The scraps are all from my stash and those of my grandmother, mother, two cousins, and two friends (so far!). I knew going into this that it would be a long-term project, but as I have completed a signature quilt over 2 years and a tee-shirt quilt over 4 years, I believe I can do it! Might be a while, as I’d like to get it to a decent size, at the rate I’m going it could be 5-6 years to complete.

How beautiful! Crazy quilting is such a neat idea and I love to see the effects that can be created.

“Socrates said, “The misuse of language induces evil in the soul.” He wasn’t talking about grammar. To misuse language is to use it the way politicians and advertisers do, for profit, without taking responsibility for what the words mean. Language used as a means to get power or make money goes wrong: it lies. Language used as an end in itself, to sing a poem or tell a story, goes right, goes towards the truth. A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls. Story-tellers and poets spend their lives learning that skill and art of using words well. And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper.”

Paris-based Japanese artist Nozomi created an exquisite series of iridescent crystaline and mineral beetle specimens. Entitled The Mineral Insect, each beautiful beetle was designed using 3D sculpting software, created with a 3D printer, and then hand-painted with lacquer.

Losing traction on the most recent chapter of my fic has led to a major overhaul and rewrite of the previous chapters. This may or may not be productive to moving forward, but I’m still compelled to tighten up the plot and rewrite weaker scenes. Wish me luck and merry hunting for all the mistakes and oopsies.
